Wrong Etymology[edit]

The etymology listed is for "burger", not "burgher". Which is not "burgh-er". Burgh is not an alternate spelling of berg. The word is "berg-her", "ruler of the city".Rosengarten Zu Worms (talk) 11:43, 25 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

No. See also Middle English bergh, German Berg, etc. -- the version with the "e" refers to mountain, not city.
The medial "h" in burgher is not part of the second morpheme: rather, this is partially a carryover from Old English burh, and partially an orthographic convention to indicate that the "G" should be pronounced as /ɡ/ and not as /d͡ʒ/, as "G" often softens to /d͡ʒ/ when followed by front vowels /i/ or /e/.
