Latin etymology: carō or carnis?[edit]

I see that the Latin section lists an etymology citing carn∙is -is as the source of the first word root. Since it is a variant of car∙ō -nis, I'm wondering if this is actually the direct source of the carni- in carnifex instead. Can anybody verify this?
