Missing transitive verb sense[edit]

In reggae lyrics this is sometimes used transitively with a person as the object: I am only guessing but it seems to mean something like "criticise", "call out", or even "yell at". Two examples: "No trust dem as far as the blind can see / Chant dem down" (from Heart of Stone (Chant Them)) and "Babylon bwoy dem kill a youth an one old woman a chant some" (translated on one site as "the police killed a youth and an old woman is chanting some of them"; from Kingston Town by Alborosie).
