Clunge[edit]

The word Clunge was an invention by me in 1975. My friend Alex Black worked in a hospital in Barrow in Furness at that time and asked me for a scottish sounding insult because his girlfriend at that time wanted to learn Scottish. at that time Scotland was a mysterious land to the north. I said, "Use, Awa an wheech yer gurdie and stracle yer clunge". the whole phrase is meaningless but went around Barrow in Furness like wildfire and further afield. Wheech means to throw, but Gurdie / Stracle and Clunge were just inventions. The next time I heard the word Clunge was on The Inbetweeners. There is a musical instument called a Hurdy Gurdy that was popular with street musicians in Glasgow up to the 1950s. Annoys me when I hear Clunge referring to any part of anatomy.
