A couple of sources (including a 2014 blog posting by Holly George) credit Jay Salinas with coining this term in 1988 in Wisconsin. However the article by him and Donna Neuwirth (quoted) as well as an NEA interview with Salinas, place that in the late 1990s. It is not clear that use of the term by the Nov. 1999 conference, "A Sense of Place: Creating a Collective Vision for the Cultural Heritage Resources of the Philadelphia Region" (per the article by Marilyn Sifford, quoted, and the conference report), was informed by Salinas's definition. It seems like there are several not mutually incompatible uses of the term, with the Wisconsin usage being compared to "terroir," the Philadelphia usage focusing on cultural heritage, and uses in Canada (per 2 quotes) emphasizing arts and creative culture.--A12n (talk) 01:02, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
