Where does the idiomatic inversion of auxiliary and verb some from? --Backinstadiums (talk) 16:36, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

hardly + modal dare[edit]

The "Extra Examples" section in the entry of DARE in the Oxford Learner's dict. shows

I hardly dared breathe.

Dare here forms its past as a (semi)modal verb, yet the position in the sentence of the adverb, hardly, is not the cannonical one after a modal and before the next main verb. Why is it so? OED: DARE and HARDLY --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:04, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

without inflection[edit]

Because of its double status as an ordinary verb and as a semi-modal,dare can be used without inflection for past as well as present time: She turned round. She dare not look at his face --Backinstadiums (talk) 12:07, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

daren't reads 2. Contraction of 'dared not.' --Backinstadiums (talk) 11:18, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
In 'yes/no'-questions, you put the base form dare in front of the subject without using an auxiliary or modal. After the subject, you use an infinitive without'to'. Dare she write? (Note that you use the base form whether you are talking about the present or the past). --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:27, 22 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

The auxiliary forms emphasize the attitude or involvement of the speaker while the main verb forms present a more objective situation[edit]

The auxiliary forms emphasize the attitude or involvement of the speaker while the main verb forms present a more objective situation. Thus how dare you operate this machinery without proper training? expresses indignation at the action, whereas How do you dare to operate this machinery without proper training? is a genuine request for information https://www.ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=dare --Backinstadiums (talk) 19:19, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

What is the past tense of how dare you? OED shows You told him? How did you dare? --Backinstadiums (talk) 19:21, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
