Etymology[edit]
Isn't the etymology for "Dirt" actually an Old Norse loan word, from 'drita', meaning scat or stool? Nagelfar 15:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, probably (the ON word is drit, which is also the way it was spelt in Middle English). The early history is not clear but that seems the likeliest scenario. Widsith 16:24, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Why is that likelier than it coming from Old English directly? The text says there was an OE verb gedritan, to defecate. Why is it likelier this comes from Old Norse rather than Old English? --Saforrest (talk) 22:48, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
