- No, they really are synonyms for this dated medical sense of "empiricism." It means medical practice without scientific basis, and has a distinctly negative connotation. The OED confirms this sense. This sense should not be confused with the widely-supported contemporary advocacy of "evidence-based medicine" in the health care community.
