Talk:enforcement

Enforcement is a tricky word, mainly when used in an international context. The idea carried by the word in USA and in UK does not have translation in many other languages. Because of that discussion or text produced and translated to be used by non english speaking countries is often confusing and open door to conflict or difficulties to reach an agreement.

Even within North America the extent of the activities covered by the word enforcement will vary. In some areas it will only apply to police activities. In other it will include the work of other officers such customs officers, game wardens or fisheries officers. I have also seen it applied to include activities such as issuing permits, operating gates restricting access and doing promotion activities to ensure compliance.

I am not saying it is rigth or not, I just want to remember to those using the word to be cautious and give enough context to ensure that their idea will be well understood mainly if translation is required.

In non police environment particularly in non English speaking countries, role of police is often seen as necessary dirty work and people do not want to be linked to it. When effective enforcement is required it is often difficult for enforcers to obtain collaboration or support from non police organizations. It is why it is so important to clearly explain the meaning of the word Enforcement when you use it.
