It could have been derived from the name Willigar, which is the combination of the Proto-Germanic roots 'will', which means 'will', and 'gar', which means spear. Compare Wilhelm, which is a combination of 'will' and 'helmet'. Willigar also seems to have survived in the surname Wilkerson.
