Gegë possible origins[edit]

Could it be possible that Gegë actually is the Gheg form of gjegje (answer)? It would make more sense than the two etymologies listed, as it probably is an endonym, and the Arbëresh also refer to other speakers as Gjegje. The Port-Albanian word is *glaglā. For Tosk, it would have went *glaglā -> *gleglë -> gjegjë (singular, Old) -> gjegje (plural, modern). For Gheg, it would have went *glaglā -> *gleglë -> g'jeg'jë (g'j like in Malsia dialect, like "gyuh" as seen in g'juhë vs gjuhë, typical when the PA sound is *-gl-) -> gegë. Just a theory of my own, thought I should put it out there. Could have meant "one who answers" as to differentiate speakers of Latin, Greek, and Latinized Illyrian and Thracian, and much later Slavic. Muji28 (talk) 04:21, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
