Etymology[edit]

from Proto-Germanic *waldaz, *waldan- (“rule, authority”), from Proto-Indo-European *welə-, *wele- (“to be strong, possess”). Cognate with Old High German giwalt (“power, might”), Old Dutch gewalt, Old English wealda (“power, dominion, mastery”).
