give someone enough rope. And do we even need enough? Per utramque cavernam 10:16, 9 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

The old Chambers 1908 dictionary I've been going through has (under rope) the sub-entry give a person rope, "to allow a person full scope". In my personal experience (which may be inadequate, wrong, etc.) the metaphor is that if you give a person enough rope, they will hang themselves, i.e. the person is irresponsible or unwise. We also have give him enough rope and he'll hang himself. - excarnateSojourner (talk|contrib) 06:11, 29 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
