The "gridiron and dough boys"[edit]

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) has this as slang for "the flag of the United States, in allusion to the stars and stripes" (glossed as "sea", i.e. naval slang). I see it mentioned in a couple of other books, but perhaps not actually used. Equinox 04:48, 11 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
