According to Brian Branston in "The Lost Gods of England" (1974), one of the names for Odin is Grim, which exists in many English place names, and in Old Norse refers to someone who shadows his face, since Odin often went around in disguise. This specific meaning, beyond the usual "fierce," is also an intriguing way of accounting for "The Grim Reaper," often depicted as hooded.
