Wikipedia gives slightly more specific details about "high bailiff" positions on the Isle of Man and in Vermont, USA, which seem to be broadly the same thing. Chambers 1908 defines it as "an officer who serves writs, etc., in certain franchises, exempt from the ordinary supervision of the sheriff". Equinox 02:08, 23 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
