Webster 1913 says that Spenser used this word in an obsolete sense: "to call or name". Given Webster's propensity to re-spell British citations (he also wrote inquire for Byron's and Milton's enquire), I suppose that belongs at enquire. Anyhow I can't find the citation. Neutralization: enquire vs inquire[edit]

According to Wiedenhof's A Grammar of Mandarin,

Neutralization: a contrast in a given language is not made in certain positions (English distinguishes [ɛ] vs. [ı], but in many forms when the vowel is unstressed it doesn't, for example inquire [ɛŋ/ɪŋ], also evidenced in a variation in spelling enquire/inquire).
