I heard that prison officers were called "Screws" because one of the punishments was for the prisoner to walk on a tread Mill, and the man supervising the prisoner could turn a screw which made walking on the Treadmill harder to turn, thus making the punishment harder, has anyone else heard of this ?

Why is gaoler marked obsolete? I certainly still use goal and gaoler.
