slang: penis[edit]

Why is "lunchbox" slang for clothed penis? Equinox 18:01, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. I managed to find one cite but haven't spotted others. - -sche (discuss) 17:35, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Speculation: a "box" is a kind of underwear (worn by sportspeople?), and "lunch" might suggest oral sex. Equinox 18:37, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
GDoS has this sense but gives no indication as to how it developed. Einstein2 (talk) 19:11, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

About the computing sense[edit]

We have: "(computing, slang) A luggable; an early laptop computer, usually a unit with a handle and a fold-out keyboard".

However, WP's article on SPARCstation lists a number of "lunchbox systems" (apparently contrasted with pizza box, q.v.) which do not seem to be laptops. Is this SPARC-specific? Is it broad enough for us to have a sense (and if so, what does it mean exactly, anyway)? Equinox 22:30, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

"(slang) A person or object constantly at one's side (in the manner of a lunchbox). = sidekick". Equinox 13:42, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

slang: inattentive or absent-minded person[edit]

I just saw someone tell someone else "you're such a lunchbox" as a response to her including a somewhat sexual photo in a set of photos she uploaded. Urban Dictionary says "lunchbox" can mean a tardy or inattentive person, and Xin-An Lu (2004 07) A Concise Collection of College Students' Slang, iUniverse, →ISBN, page 61 defines it as "someone that is extremely absent minded", so I gather the meaning is that she was inattentively/absent-mindedly not paying attention to the fact that the sexual photo was in the set and just uploading them all. - -sche (discuss) 17:35, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

GDoS has “lunch bag (n.) (also lunchbox, lunch pail, lunchsack) [] a dull, foolish person, an undesirable person” with several quotes (although mostly mentions). One of the works cited there says it is a development from out to lunch, where we have a “clueless, inattentive, or careless” sense. Einstein2 (talk) 19:09, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
