Is the pronunciation of the i the same as in the original word minor /aɪ/ or is it shortened /ɪ/ like in some other words that are added a suffix (wild /aɪ/ --> wilderness /ɪ/)? So is it /mɪnəritɪ/ or /maɪnəritɪ/? (Sorry, don't know where the stress is) --Ferike333 19:13, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Usage note[edit]

Socially speaking, a minority is an ethnic, racial, religious, or other group having a distinctive presence within a larger society, so it should be avoided in contexts where a group's status with regard to the majority population is irrelevant, as opposed to statistical or political.

Minority is used to refer to an individual, as in As a minority, I am particularly sensitive to the need for fair hiring practices, but in our 2011 survey, 58 percent of the Usage Panel found this example unacceptable. However, when the word was used in the plural without a numeral or a quantifier like many or some—as in The firm announced plans to hire more minorities and women— only 25 percent judged an example such as this one unacceptable: the word is understood as referring to the members of a group taken collectively rather than as individuals. https://www.ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=minority --Backinstadiums (talk) 10:29, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
