Maybe connected to moiety, from Norman and French, which has moitié (i.e. half). If you are a native English speaker and not a French speaker, if you listen to moitié in French and try to repeat it, it can easily come out as motley. Now look at one of motley's definitions that has to do with jesters, and notice that jesters are often represented dressed in shirts that are half one colour, half another one.
