Genetics definition[edit]

The definition "a change in the sequence of DNA within a chromosome that results in a new trait not found in the parent type" is not correct.

Some mutations have phenotypic consequences, others do not. "...that results in a new trait not found in the parent type" should be removed.
Mutable genetic material does not exist only in chromosomes. To include the genome of RNA viruses and extrachromosomal material like plasmids, "within a chromosome" should also be removed.

That doesn't leave much behind. I changed it to "any heritable change in the base-pair sequence of genetic material, namely DNA (or RNA in the case of some viruses)". Dr d12 18:42, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Definition of "Genetic Material"[edit]

I have removed infomation about what genetic matterial is and enabled access to infomation on what genetic material is by linking to the definition of genetic material (87.80.103.44 16:31, 28 January 2010 (UTC))Reply

Replacing one 2-letter word with another, "of"[edit]

Its one small change but I hope the result of the change is a great reduction of the quantity of ambiguity in the genetics definition. (87.80.103.44 16:39, 28 January 2010 (UTC))Reply

mutation[edit]

Rfv-sense - collective noun. SemperBlotto (talk) 22:48, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

This appears to be real, but is borderline only-in-dictionaries. See:
  • 1984, Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Wildlife, volume 45:
Birdwatchers would enjoy a host of sparrows, a herd of swans, a descent of woodpeckers, a herd of wrens, and mutation of thrushes.
  • 2010, Doug Bennet, Tim Tiner, The Complete Up North: A Guide to Ontario's Wilderness from Black Flies to the Northern Lights, page 57:
Names for a group: A flute or mutation of thrushes.
  • 2013, Jason Sacher, A Compendium of Collective Nouns: From an Armory of Aardvarks to a Zeal of Zebras, page 196:
    A Mutation of Thrushes
The authors of the books of venery were not predicting Darwin with this term, but taking a cue from a common fable of the time.
The latter source describes a myth of thrushes periodically shedding their legs and growing new ones. bd2412 T 04:24, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
