Etymology[edit]

Where does the sense "country" come from? From đất nước ("homeland < land and water?")? (Also the unlisted senses: (bàn cờ) coup; le pas (du cheval); situation (à lequelle on est acculé); impasse; moyen; truc; (vulg.) avantage; profit) Hbrug 06:46, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

That is a good question; Vdict does not give this sense--only "water." 71.66.97.228 07:01, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
It might be something similar to 山水, 江山, and 山河--for the original Vietnamese of the Red River valley the fresh water of the river, coming down from the mountains, was their lifeblood. 71.66.97.228 07:05, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
hmm, what about the senses "horse pace, gait", "means, way", "impasse", "advantage, profit", "shine, gloss"? Hbrug 07:15, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
By the way, there are a lot more senses at http://vi.wiktionary.org/wiki/n%C6%B0%E1%BB%9Bc . 71.66.97.228 07:05, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
