Figure[edit]

What makes people call black-and-white things "piebald"? It's used figuratively, but what's the figure? Here is the only thing I could think of: maybe "bald" means "white" as in bald eagle, with something dark like a chocolate pie thrown at it.
Could someone who knows the real answer please put it in the Wiktionary page?
