I agree with "deserving" from content above (clarifies the senses)[edit]

Can we paraphrase "So appalling or sad that one feels or should feel sorry for it; eliciting pity"?
Especially "that one feels" part, which is pretty subjective (including my take on the subject) and obviously there aren't any universals.
