Pizza pie, an Americanism, is by definition a misnomer. The Italian speciality known as "pizza" comprises a flat pastry bed topped with mozzarella cheese and tomato to which may be added a number of other ingredients. This is then baked in an oven. A "pie", however, is an item of bakeware that comprises a pastry bed with a raised rim, a filling and a covering layer of pastry that is crimped to the raised rim of the lower part, thereby enclosing the topping or, in this case, the filling. Known forms of "pie" are fruit pies, meat pies, etc. As the pizza does not enclose its content, it is not a pie. Other than a pizza, an open-topped "pie" is a tart.

Butterflies aren't flies and ladybirds aren't birds. Pizza pies aren't pies. Your point? Equinox 22:27, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not sure if this is acceptable, but there are currently no citations at all. I also remember seeing that name(?) in a few old comics, I'll try to find them so I can write up the issue and such. Unless these aren't acceptable?--Cyberman TM 16:20, 6 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
