Explanation for radical editing of the definition

The plank was defined as:

  1. Usually a split, flat piece of wood, often planed; it is technically distinguished from a sawn board.

There were several problems with this definition: 1. Plank is not technically distinguished from a board, it's only bigger, and the size is the main distinguishing factor. Of course planks and boards are used for different purposes in construction due to the different size and cost. 2. It's not essential from the point of view of being a plank, whether the piece of timber is planed or not. 3. The meaning of the word "split" is unclear here. Split by an ax?

That's why I wrote this instead:

A long, broad and thick piece of sawn timber, heavier and larger than a board. Hekaheka 11:51, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
