it's really splitting hairs, but i suspect the 1986 quote is using a slightly different sense of play, a countable noun meaning a particular play in sports. when i created this page back in 2020, i suspect i was thinking the same thing, and chose clumsy wording so that it would encompass all of the senses of play. i will try to think more about this, since play covers a wide semantic scope and this word could also apply to, for example, theater plays.
