Wait, so it's not a loanword from English purple?

I had always assumed that this word was just taken straight from English. I will at least keep this in mind to see if there are two words here that are being grouped together. —Soap— 14:25, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

It goes all the way back to Proto-Oceanic. See the POLLEX entry. There is more than one plant designated by the name, and not all of them have purple berries. Also, judging by Puruma (“Burma”), I have my doubts about whether the "u" in "purple" would have become "ō". Chuck Entz (talk) 19:10, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
