Yeah; Romance languages are like English in that a huge part of their lexicon is borrowed from Latin. English often gets labeled a creole for this reason (by people who know nothing about contact linguistics), but because the adstrate is superficially the same as the proto-language (both can be called “Latin”), they fail to apply the same reasoning to Romance. This is aggravated by the fact that Romance etymological dictionaries make a very poor job of distinguishing between inherited terms and borrowed terms; I am proud to say that Wiktionary is in the vanguard of presenting this important information! — Ungoliant (falai) 13:06, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
