I have a question concerning the pronunciation of the word 'proboscis': I have only ever heard the word pronounced as IPA(key): [pɹoʊˈbɪskɪs] where the second 'o' is pronounced similarly to the 'o' in 'women'—(note: this is based on spoken dialogue on the East Coast of the United States of America, specifically in Georgia and Virginia).

What data would be necessary to add this pronunciation (even as just a dialectal pronunciation) to the page?

One published source would do if it's reliable (scientific dialect survey or the like). In terms of original research, you'd need two or three videos which aren't related either with you or with each other. Otherwise you could raise the issue in the Tea room. If a number of native speakers attest that they've heard this pronunciation, it would also be accepted, I think. 2.207.102.51 22:49, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
