Isn't the more direct relationship of salute to salutare (“to greet, to salute, to hail”)? Words used as an everyday greeting like "salve" and "salvete" could easily be survivors of an archaic verb, such as the putative unattested (deprecated template usage) salveo or be some other kind of mutation. What relationship do "hello", "hi", and "goodbye have to other words in other languages? DCDuring TALK 00:22, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
