Are you sure this isn't a typo of seldom?[edit]

Hi, @Leasnam, you created this entry, but it doesn't appear in either the OED or Merriam–Webster Online, which I find quite odd. Are you sure it isn't just a typographical error for seldom? — SGconlaw (talk) 11:15, 24 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Sgconlaw, it's possible for the adverb, yet not for the adjective senses, as seldom is not used in such a way. Leasnam (talk) 10:07, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leasnam: oh, I just noticed you’ve deleted the entry. — SGconlaw (talk) 11:39, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Adjective: "rare; uncommon". Adverb: "rarely; seldom". The word looks like it may be an archaic word, but if so one would expect to find it in dictionaries such as the Century Dictionary, the Merriam–Webster Dictionary, and the OED. However, none of these dictionaries contains such an entry. The two 2011 quotations in the entry seem to be from rather random websites and do not look durably archived; the other quotations under the adverb section spell the word as seldsom. That leaves only one quotation (1817) that has the word spelled seldsome. I have a sneaking suspicion that all the quotations contain misspellings of seldom. (The OED notes that seldome is a variant spelling of seldom from Middle English through the 17th century.) — SGconlaw (talk) 20:35, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I just can't find anything for this. It's not in EDD. OED does have seldseen, which is hinted at in our etymology, but that entry doesn't mention anything resembling seldsome. Even the adverb quotes spelt seldsom are suspect. The 1982 one is an obvious error (see "seldom" earlier in the same sentence), the 2011 one is not durably archived, and I have no idea how we are expected to find the 1998 one from the year and title alone. This, that and the other (talk) 03:57, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, the adverb ones look suspect now that you point that out. The 2011 adjective I can no longer find. That leaves the one 1817 cite, which likely is a misspelling of seldome. Leasnam (talk) 10:17, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

This has not been left for a month to allow for people to come up with legitimate quotes. Let it wait out it's month before you delete it. Kiwima (talk) 19:43, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that. I was a creator, and I speedily deleted in as a 'created in error' issue. We can allow it to remain until resolved. Leasnam (talk) 18:58, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
