@Leasnam I saw that you added the current etymology. The dictionaries at the Etymologiebank consider this a derivation from zieden. Do you think that is an adequate explanation? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 14:10, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo Hi, yes ! It is almost certainly related to zieden (but prob not derived from it), with the derivation probably being way back in time. PGmc had *sudą, *sudiz (soup, stew, brew) (cf. German Sud) as related words as well. Leasnam (talk) 15:44, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've added some more info. What's unclear is how the word entered Dutch, via inheritance or by being borrowed from another language. There is no clear trace of it in Middle Dutch. Leasnam (talk) 15:49, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Leasnam Thanks, I'd say the caution is understandable. The Dutch etymological dictionaries also give High German forms with d by the way, but I do not know what their distribution is in the High German lects; certain Dutch lects (esp. Southern) have t on the other hand. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 09:57, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
