1. A loose shirt, usually made of a knit fleece, for athletic wear and now often used as casual apparel.
2. A shirt worn against the skin, usually under other clothing, to absorb sweat.

These aren't sweatshirts. A sweatshirt is not a shirt

American English word?

A sweatshirt is a very American English word, isn't it? I think it is a rarely used word in British English.
