Several definitions[edit]

This word has several definitions (5 in the Compact Oxford English dictionary).

I have changed "emotional response" to "feeling of pity or sorrow", which at least excludes anger, but doesn't cover all meanings. Pol098 20:35, 8 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

antonym of contempt?[edit]

I don't think contempt is an antonym of any definition we have. Definition #2 seems to be that of empathy (but perhaps it is used that way) and the third definition says "A mutual relationship" which I'm not sure is right, but perhaps it is. Permanent link [1]. Between shit and syphilis[edit]

There's an unsympathetic dismissal along the lines of "if you're looking for sympathy, it's between shit and syphilis in the dictionary" — but it's phrased in many different ways. I wonder if there's any way to form that into an entry, vaguely along the lines of denial is not a river in Egypt. Equinox 13:27, 21 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

No form is particularly common on its own, so I'm just going to create sympathy is between shit and syphilis. Equinox 15:11, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is Sympathy a girl's name?[edit]

It occurs in John Betjeman's quirky poem Group Life: Letchworth ("Sympathy is stencilling / Her decorative leatherwork"), but I don't know whether it's been used in reality. Equinox 15:08, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
