Etymology?

The Etimologiai szótár describes this word as "alapszava bizonytalan". Zaicz suggests a possible connection to szarm (which I don't know and cannot find), but rightly notes that the difference in vowel is a difficulty.

I wonder if this might instead be from szár in the sense of "stem" or "stalk"? I see also that the suffixes -am and -m can attach to nouns, leading me to wonder if this származik might be szár + -am / -m + -azik? I'm not quite sure what meaning the -am / -m suffix imparts, but the "stem" sense of szár seems to fit the semantics of származik quite well. "Stem" in the sense you mean and in the sense that fits here would be tő (but this verb is not *töve(d)zik). Szár is more like a stalk.

If a Hungarian term is not a suffix, I advise you use the more comprehensive, more modern, more academic, and more convenient {{R:UESz}} instead, which does have an entry on the obsolete szarm as well. They must have had a reason not to bring up szár here, I guess... Adam78 (talk) 23:08, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Given the sense listed there for szarm, I find myself thinking that "branch of a river, valley, or ditch" is not very far semantically from the idea of szár in the older sense in the UESz entry of "part of the arm or leg".
