Unless I am missing something this is really just talk + shit. See also the related terms. -- Liliana 08:55, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Keep. It's not. When one's talking shit, it doesn't mean that they're talking about feces. Boxieman (talk) 12:05, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, a person might not be expected to interpret it that literally, but which definition of shit makes this "to talk badly about something"? That's not immediately clear to me, but even if it were pointed out, there would be two meanings more prominent from a list of a dozen or more. Keep. DAVilla 12:37, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
@Boxieman there are a lot of things this doesn't mean. For example, it's not a small bird. Your interpretation isn't even possible apart from for someone who speaks very little English. Mglovesfun (talk) 13:15, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thoughts: not different from talk crap, talk bollocks, talk smack (etc.). Shit does mean rubbish or hurtful speech, ergo delete. Mglovesfun (talk) 13:15, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Not a term, but two consecutive one word terms. Mglovesfun (talk) 13:20, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
You might have a point, but I'd want to be sure we're not glossing over any distinctions. Are talk shit and talk smack more synonymous than their definitions might lead one to believe? DAVilla 13:48, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
You could also indicate to whom your response is directed via indentation. DAVilla 13:48, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Delete per Martin. --Æ&Œ (talk) 14:19, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
The second citation at [[talk smack]] suggests that some folks find a meaningful distinction among these terms. We should try to determine that distinction. DCDuring TALK 16:03, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, this phrase is used with quite a bit more versatility than the definitions suggest. For example, it can mean to brag:

  • 2011, Richard Turner, The Rise And Fall Of The Crips, page 52:
For a minute, it felt good hearing them talk shit about how down they were-and who they'd work for.

I'm not about to go chasing citations, but I have also seen the phrase used to mean con (as with a con artist), to stall or distract, and to shoot the shit. bd2412 T 16:50, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

If it is SoP, can one "write shit", or "type shit", in any or all of the same senses? Equinox 21:27, 2 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Very well then, keep per Equinox. Cheers! bd2412 T 03:40, 1 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Write/type shit definitely feel like a verb + noun, whereas talk shit feels like an idiom. --BB12 (talk) 17:42, 26 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
