It's a snowclone. Others include this from New York: that and a token will get you on the subway (In fact, all it took was a token to get on the subway. Implication being that whatever "that" referred to was worthless. Because tokens were used for about a century in New York City, the exact expression had longevity, unlike most forms. Compare *That and a 3 million Papiermarks will get you a cup of coffee" in Germany in 1922. DCDuring TALK 22:55, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

I've encountered this as "love and a (specific amount of money) will buy you a coffee." Or for the characteristically Canadian version: "love and a loonie will get you a coffee at Timmy's." Basically meaning that one cannot achieve a desired end with good intentions alone, but must have the tools or resources necessary to realize it. -Cloudcuckoolander (talk) 03:13, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
