the regions[edit]

Bad entry title (and badly formatted). SemperBlotto 15:17, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

WT:CFI#Articles "Omit an initial article unless it makes a difference in the meaning." The phrase the regions has a meaning in Ireland that regions does not have. Jnestorius 15:35, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Delete. Typical ellipsis, context-sensitive meaning. Adding "the" converts any term to a definite one. DCDuring TALK 16:49, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
"region" does not mean "place in Ireland other than Dublin", yet "the regions" does mean "all places in Ireland other than Dublin". At what wiktionary page should that information be given? Jnestorius 18:03, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'd be happy with no page. But that's just me. I'd be even happier if we had no proper names whatsoever, leaving that territory to Wikipedia, hewing closely to our original charter. DCDuring TALK 18:38, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've just checked the OED, and sense 4b of "region" is "Chiefly Brit. In pl. With the. The parts of a country outside the capital or chief seat of government." The OED isn't big into proper names either; but then, it's not a proper name. Jnestorius 18:54, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Today I stumbled across an entry Rock that shows how we like to present similar information, ie, at region or, possibly, regions. DCDuring TALK 20:16, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's what I thought, too, and [[the Continent]] and [[the Bowery]] are redirects. Yet we do have [[The Mall]], [[The Strip]], [[the District]], [[the States]], [[the Union]], and [[The Beltway]] as entries.—msh210 (talk) 20:45, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well I've added it to regions. I don't mind where it's at, but deleting rather than moving was not the right action. Jnestorius 21:09, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Looks good there. Note that no one deleted it: it was nominated for deletion, is all. If the discussion here led to a community opinion that it should be at [[regions]], then someone would have put it there (if no one else, then, I'd hope, the deleting admin).—msh210 (talk) 21:18, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Delete all. DAVilla 09:12, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The citations for definition #2 make it seem idiomatic to me. That should be kept, though I don't really care where. Mglovesfun (talk) 13:52, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
