Chambers 1908 calls it "a ring for the thumb fastened to the guard of a dagger or sword", but Hank Reinhardt's Book of Swords says: "This is called a thumb ring and I haven't the slightest idea as to why. It is on the opposite side of the dagger from the thumb, and the people who think you put your thumb through it have no concept of swordplay. The ring is there to protect the hand from a sword sliding down the blade." Equinox ◑ 16:01, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
