I removed the qualifiers "square or rectangular" and "perpendicular to the length of the ship". Those qualifiers are correct in the case of a square-rigged ship, but wrong for a schooner. (On a schooner, the topsail is a fore-and-aft sail, and is usually triangular.)

And in answer to Polyglot's query, yes, it's written as one word. Ortonmc 19:37, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC)
