According the Funk & Wagnell's dictionary 1942 edition, TYE as in sense 4 only, may be semantically influenced by Anglo-Saxon THWĒAN[4] [dipthon pronounced as in 'town'] (to wash - in this instance - ores) whose cognate may include Swedish TVẲDA[4]. Citation from Funk & Wagnell two volume dictionary 1947. The origin of tye in this sense is more likely from Old English téag, téah [5] (casket or box for sorting).
