etym2 > etym3[edit]

i changed the claimed meaning of yen from desire to opium, a sense we did not list back in 2015 when this page was created. i believe its the most likely etymology, since sense 2 ("desire") even comes from an earlier opium-related meaning itself, which did not get to us at the time. Nonetheless I can see how I might be wrong, if yen sleep is a calque from Chinese perhaps, where the word yen by itself had more meanings in Chinese than in English at the time. I'd at least want this to show that it doesnt relate to the Japanese currency, which is actually what I'd thought it was at first. Soap 23:08, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
