Arabic chapter numbers[edit]

@Benwing2: regarding this edit, how then to ensure the chapter number appears in Arabic numerals as used in the work? Thanks. — Sgconlaw (talk) 01:34, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sgconlaw I didn't get your ping. The |chapter= parameter already handles Roman and Arabic numerals automatically so there's no need to do conversions on it. Benwing2 (talk) 23:25, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Or are you saying you want to be able to enter the chapter number in Roman numerals and have it autoconverted to Arabic numerals? That won't happen but why would you want to allow that? Benwing2 (talk) 23:27, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: yes, the latter. The work uses Arabic chapter numbers, so the intent of the wikitext is to convert the numbers into that format if Roman numerals are specified. Similarly, in other works where Roman chapter numbers are used, I have added wikitext which does the reverse. The wikitext seems to work fine, at least the last time I checked. — Sgconlaw (talk) 04:26, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw Your added Wikitext causes problems because it breaks when the chapter is neither Arabic nor Roman. See jim-dandy for an example. I strongly believe we should not cater for people entering the wrong type of number; your approach seems really hacky, and how common is it really for people to enter the wrong type of number? Benwing2 (talk) 04:35, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: I’m afraid I can’t possibly say how often editors type the wrong type of number, but if the work has chapter numbers why should anyone be typing text into that field? (I always check to see if the work has other chapters such as a preface, and cater for those if necessary.) — Sgconlaw (talk) 04:46, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
People put the "wrong" type number of number all the time. It shouldn't be an issue for an editor to check whether to use 1 or I or i for each crappy template. P. Sovjunk (talk) 18:40, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
