Etymology[edit]
Attested as Turkeije in 1678. Derived from Turkije (“Turkey”). Potentially named after a Spanish fortress predominantly manned by Muslim soldiers. Alternatively, the name may have been given as an insult by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages.
