Inherited from Old Swedish skaffare (steward, manager, administrator), derived from Middle Low German schaffer, derived from Middle High German schaffer, derived from Old High German scaffari.

Most likely further influenced by surface analysis, skaffa (get, acquire, procure) +‎ -are (-er). First attested in 1526.[1]

Cognate with Old Danish skaffer and skaffere.
