It [on the fly encryption] is a technical term, but only in the same way as (looking at my program menu) program compatability wizard and scanner and camera wizard are technical terms. Personally, I would not expect to look either of them up as a phrase. On the fly is idiomatic (and of course we have an entry for it, to which we might add without disruption to the other activity which is pretty close to transparently when it relates to computing, rather than say newspaper printing, which is, I think, an earlier use of the phrase).

In the OTFE definition, in case we keep it, I have changed links from on the fly to on the fly since we already have on the fly defined in that idiomatic sense. I have not yet improved the def of on the fly as I suggested above, since we do not yet show the appropriate sense of disruption, do not have transparently at all, and do not have transparent in the sense of invisible. I haven't time to do them now, and may not be online very much for the next two weeks, but they are on my list, and I will do them later, if no one gets there first. (Also, I want to check earlier uses of on the fly, which I think used to refer to things done during newspaper printing without stopping the presses. Does anyone have any info? And if so, was it the first use? Maybe also associated with fly tipping, so I'm not sure which sense of fly it would come from.) --Enginear 01:58, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

(from GP) Go to WT:PREFS, turn on "Popups", "Patrol", "Enhanced patrol", "Refresh patrolling", then in Special:Preferences turn of the mediawiki default "Enhanced" Recentchanges display.) So yes, you were doing something wrong, sortof...that page is obsolete. If you see it at all, you are probably doing it the hard way. If instead you use "popups" to hover over a (diff), you can then click on the (mark) link, and go the the next one (saving quite a few page loads in the process.)

Sorry, but I don't know. The reason I deleted your request was that requests like that should go on the Discussion (aka Talk) pages, and not on the main article pages. (You will find that the request is already at Wiktionary talk:List of protologisms/numbers.) Also, please do not leave e-mail addresses anywhere on this site. They get spammed. (So I have deleted yours above.) If you must give an address, encrypt it in some way so that machines cannot read it. You could also try asking at WT:TR, but it will probably just be deleted. Our job is to record words that are actually used to describe things, not those which are only talked about (see WT:CFI. --Enginear 17:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Hiding Etymology

In a discussion you made a suggestion (Jan '07) that Etymology be hidden "under" a bar, as translations are. This seemed like a wonderful solution to the considerations raised in the discussion. What are the prospects for getting movement on this idea? Or, is it in process already? I think that the user interface to long entries is poor because readers have to use the scroll bar or "mouse + PgDn" to find what they need if it is not the first PoS (let alone if there is a long etymology). What are your thoughts? Is there a forum for this? How best to bring up? DCDuring 17:17, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

I haven't time at present to follow up and add the sense and reference quoted in the following 'pedia quote, but I see the OED2+ has several cites of similar usage at around the same time, ie come out for = publicly support, which it suggests are precursors of come out as [gay] -- if anyone else has time, please do so.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
