Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Ultimateria (talk) 03:30, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

pt-ipa[edit]

Please be careful with the pronunciations, especially those from Portugal and some where you forgot the accent Stríðsdrengur (talk) 14:09, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@GabMarquetto Please look at my notice Stríðsdrengur (talk) 15:16, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GabMarquetto Please look at the warnings Stríðsdrengur (talk) 21:23, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am being careful. Whenever I miss an accent, I am reviewing later. I have corrected the warnings I got. GabMarquetto (talk) 21:36, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Checking if my edits don't fall in CAT:ERR regularly. GabMarquetto (talk) 21:39, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok thanks for the reply, I was just worried that you were aware of this, otherwise we would have even more work Stríðsdrengur (talk) 22:21, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I always preview my edits before publishing. You should do likewise. While it's not the end of the world if your edit ends up in CAT:E for an hour or two, it's best to avoid it. To give you an idea, three of us have been working over the last couple of days fixing hundreds of entries to clear things so new errors will be easier to spot. There's one error that's been there for a day and a half that can probably be fixed in 10 seconds by someone who knows what they're doing. The person who left it is very careful, so I can only assume they just didn't see it due to the clutter in CAT:E. Module errors like the two you left an hour ago are blatantly obvious in preview, so you can catch them before people like me have to fix your edits or nag you. @GabMarquetto I agree with User:Stríðsdrengur. Also you added broken pronunciations to arquitecto and arquitecta, which are obsolete terms. The pronunciations you added were (a) missing an accent, (b) wrong in any case because the c is not pronounced. You need to be a lot more careful. Benwing2 (talk) 03:11, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@GabMarquetto Once again, you are adding broken pronunciations, in this case to esphera. Please (a) don't add broken pronunciations, (b) don't add pronunciations to obsolete terms. If you continue to ignore my messages and keep adding broken pronunciations, I may block you. Benwing2 (talk) 22:14, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I am taking obsolete terms off the list. GabMarquetto (talk) 22:16, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Organism names[edit]

I've made changes in two of your entries. Let me know if you have any evidence that my changes are erroneous.

How widely is Cubeo spoken? Only in Colombia or in Brazil too? Elsewhere? Nevermind. I looked it up: 6,300 speakers. I missed Venezuela. DCDuring (talk) 03:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wording of definitions[edit]

We try to write definitions that are phrases, verb phrases for verbs, NPs for nouns, etc. Do what you can. If you want, I'll take a look. I may make changes even if you don't ask me to!!! DCDuring (talk) 03:36, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

One NP or VP per definition? You mean I should not be including the commentaries? Are they too extra? I am taking them from a Cubeo dictionary. GabMarquetto (talk) 03:38, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you can find a way to get it into a long NP or VP that's fine. English phrase can have subordinate clauses. But maybe we should hold of on trying to "improve"/standardize the wording. It is really quite charming and, if the informant can be trusted, possibly more reflective of what the Cubeo think is worth noting. DCDuring (talk) 04:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sloppy formatting[edit]

You need to slow down your creation of new entries and familiarize yourself with established formatting (see e.g. WT:EL and WT:NORM). Today alone you created hundreds of Greenlandic entries that are missing headword lines. See diff, where I also corrected a typo that suggests you aren't even looking at these pages after you publish them. Note that "vi" is not a part of speech: diff. Please clean all these entries up. You also left undesired redlinks like [[clothes off]] at atisaajarpoq which will never be an entry because it obviously doesn't meet WT:CFI.

I also want to discourage the wholesale copying of dictionaries, especially of languages you don't speak because you are unable to discern any errors or shortcomings that may be present; not all dictionaries are created equal. Finally, please don't add requests for etymology (or pronunciation, etc.) in languages with very few editors because the requests will just sit on those pages indefinitely, and we consider them clutter on English Wiktionary. Ultimateria (talk) 06:22, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ultimateria: Do the math. Almost 1800 edits over 6 hours. That comes out to an average of 5 edits per minute, or about 12 seconds per edit. I suppose one could do that without using a bot, but that would require assembly-line-style editing with pre-assembled text- basically editing like a bot, without allowing time to think about what one is doing. Either way, it's unacceptable. I've blocked their account for running an unauthorized bot. To be unblocked, they need to either commit to never doing that again, or to follow the procedures outlined in WT:BOT. Chuck Entz (talk) 08:39, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry for what I have done. This started by me willing to practice some code and creating tools that helped me while helping Wiktionary. However, this got out of hand, I got bold and stopped checking what I was doing so often. I put my machine to unsupervisedly create entries of a language I never spoke a word of. This was not a mistake, I know what I have done and would not do it again. I am not trying to go over my punition, but am trying to fix what I have done. Yes, I created another account without telling and got IP blocked for it, but I am willing to undo the damage my code did overnight, manually. My nickname was obvious so that you could see I was sorry and trying to make up. I deeply regret what I did and promise I won't ever do anything similar if given a second chance. Please let me at least undo this mess. GabMarquetto (talk) 22:56, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why was your first reaction to getting blocked to create a new account and keep editing? — SURJECTION / T / C / L / 08:52, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Surjection I wanted to correct my mistake by myself before I sent a message saying I was sorry for it. GabMarquetto (talk) 16:47, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

About your block[edit]

See Wiktionary:Beer_parlour/2024/March#User:GabMarquetto. Feel free to participate in the discussion. Chuck Entz (talk) 14:59, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I have unblocked you, pursuant to the discussion above. Going forward, it would be a good idea to focus your edits/contributions on languages which you know well enough to ensure that your edits are correct. There are request pages where you can ask speakers of other languages to contribute particular entries if they are missing. Happy editing! - -sche (discuss) 18:32, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
