Welcome[edit]

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Rhymes start from the stressed syllable, by the way.[edit]

Hello! First off, thank you so much for helping make so many great placename entries! I just wanted to let you know — the way that many of your edits use the "Rhymes" template is a liiiiiittle bit incorrect. The rhyming bit is supposed to start with the vowel of the STRESSED syllable, not just the LAST syllable.

Like, for example, "Shelburne" and "Whitbourne" DON'T rhyme (but your use of the Rhymes template essentially stated that 'they do'). While they have the same last syllable — what's important is that rhymes start from the STRESSED syllable. "Shelburne" would rhyme with "-ellburn", and "Whitbourne" would rhyme with "-ittburn", but they don't rhyme with each other. Paintspot (talk) 03:44, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

EDIT: Oh. Wow. I just saw the dozens upon dozens of pages ending with "-County" that you've put in Category:Rhymes:English/i. You've listed over a HUNDRED-and-two of them as rhyming with "bee" and "me". They don't — they rhyme with "bounty" and "county". Not to be rude, but — as the user who added the erroneous Rhymes template to all of them, would you please mind fixing all of these "County" errors from "rhymes|en|i" to "rhymes|en|aʊnti" instead? Thank you for the comment! I'll see about fixin them as soon as I have the time. My apologies for the mistakes, I'll ensure that they won't be made again! Ilhuicaatl (talk) 11:54, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
All done, please let me know if you see any other particularly egregious mistakes and I will fix them as soon as possible. Considering the fact that a lot of the rhymes I've added are most likely incorrect, I'll fix them wherever I find them, but it's possible that I'll overlook some of them. Anyhow, thank you once again for bringing this to my attention and I'll see to it that it's fixed. Ilhuicaatl (talk) 12:28, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Retirement[edit]

As indicated on my user page, this account is retired as of December 2022. Real life has to take precedence over making contributions. Feel free to make any edits/corrections to contributions as you see fit, with the caveat (of course) that I won't be around to respond to any questions or comments.
